Job : lecturer in the
English Department, Faculty of Arts, Zagazig University

Is working as instructor in Zagazige
University your first
experience as lecturer ?
No, I worked as a lecturer of English
literature in MSA University before lecturing in Zagazig University.
--------------------------------------------
Do you remember your first lecture you gave ?
Of course I do. I remember that I prepared
a lot for this first lecture, not just writing the relevant information in a notebook, but also making a visual rehearsal of every detail from the very first moment of the lecture to the very end.
I was very worried then and I wondered how it would look like and how the students would receive me. Alhamdullelah,
as I prepared it well and exerted a lot of effort gathering information, not just about the subject-matter of the course but about teaching methods and communication skills as well, my first lecture turned to be a very good one and
I got more than positive feedback from the students. The point is, when you have something to do, even if it seems difficult at the beginning, give it time and spirit and be sure that you will succeed and that your effort will be fruitful. This is the law of life; God's law, even if it seems that sometimes this law has exceptions. .

Tell us briefly about how you were student and your long run to have a Ph.D ?
It was a time of continual studying, reading,
searching and building my character, but I usually do things in
moderation. I used to get a break from time to time to relax, refresh my mind and enjoy life. I used to be the top student, but I wasn't that traditional kind of top students who seem to do nothing in life except studying!
-----------------------------------------
Did you faced some problems in your life ?
I would call them challenges, not
problems. If you look at any difficulty
that faces you not as a problem that is hard to overcome, but as a challenge which examines your strength, flexibility and ability to search for outlets, you will achieve a lot in your life, and that applies to study, work and personal life. As for me, however, God
has been so tender with me; I've been confronted with many challenges that required a lot of patience, faith in god and self-confidence, but no big problem that reached the extent of being a tragedy or so. I say that because I know people in my age
and in yours whose life is a continual struggle to get over daily problems and challenges.

What do you think about the current situation in our department in particular and the University education in general ?
I think the biggest problem in our department
and in governmental education in Egypt in general is that students are not regarded as an important component in the educational process (I'm talking about what actually happens on the ground, not what is formally and theoretically said).
For some instructors, students are the last thing to think about, and of course you can guess what are their priorities.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Can you point out some fundamental differences between Education In America and in Egypt ?
The main difference is that education in American is real education! Real education aims at giving the students tangible academic and technical skills that can help them find a place in the work field, and, more importantly, it aims at contributing to building the student character and ability to think and
communicate, as an independent individual, in a positive way. Concerning education in Egypt, you all know how it is like.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Could the American system of learning be applied in Egypt and to what extent it will succeed ?
Of course, nothing is impossible, at least on the individual level. I mean some individual instructors who aspire to make a change can apply what they see as the positive aspects of the American experience in Egypt. I very strongly believe in the ability of the
individuals to make a difference, regardless of how the general system works.

What can you say For Those
Frustrated
Life is full of so many opportunities, but you have to change your attitude and the way you look to things. "We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated."
----------------------------------------------------
Negative
I will cite Barack Obama's saying "Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek."
--------------------------------------------------------------
Lazy
Don't blame but yourself. You have to know that nothing will work
unless you do, and that whatever the talents with which you start out, being lazy, you have condemned yourself to a second-rate life, second-rate thoughts, and second-rate friends.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pessimist
I simply say that pessimism contradicts with faith in God. Actually, no one knows enough to be a pessimist, and God is much more generous than our thoughts. A funny quote in this respect refers to the optimist as a person who sees a light where there is none, whereas the pessimist comes and turns it off
